COMMUNITY: JOIN AAUW IN SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

Welcome to AAUW Huntingdon Branch, especially for all those who are thinking of joining forces with us to help those in Huntingdon County, either by joining the branch or through collaboration with us. You are most welcome.

The purpose of this page is to introduce you to the ways that AAUW is working to help those in our community. The current members of AAUW, both adult and student, are hard workers for sure! But we can do so much more with the help of new members from the community and student volunteers from Juniata College and by joining forces on shared projects with other organizations that share one or more of our goals. Grab a cup of coffee and join us.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out for more information from:

What is AAUW?

AAUW has been empowering women as individuals and as a community since 1881. For more than 140 years, we have worked together as a national grassroots organization to improve the lives of millions of women and their families. AAUW welcomes members of any gender identification into our organization. AAUW strategic initiatives include: education and training, economic security, and leadership.

AAUW has a solid core of values in place. As AAUW continues to move forward in a changing world, so have our Strategic Plan and our Vision Statement. Our mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. Our vision is equality for all and our values are nonpartisan, fact-based, having integrity, and inclusion and intersectionality.

You do not need to become a member of AAUW to volunteer with us in the community.

The best way to explain how our awesome student members work with us and what they gain is through this AAUW Student Flyer.

AAUW in Huntingdon

You can view some of the ways that AAUW has been working in Huntingdon here  and through our photo gallery. However, there are other programs and events that may not be listed here. Our hope is to increase our presence and positive effect in the community even more with events that we are planning for the upcoming academic year.

Get Involved to:

  • Fight the passage of Pennsylvania’s SB 106. Reproductive freedom has been an AAUW policy principle since 1977. Learn more at Where We Stand: Reproductive Rights.
  • Advocate for equal pay for equal work. Pay inequity hits women and their families over their lifetimes, and the difference usually begins right after graduation. In addition, since Social Security benefits are tied to earnings, if you earn less than someone else in an equivalent position, you have less money not only in the present but also in retirement.

Equal Pay by Race Umbrella

  • Provide salary negotiation training to the community. “Work Smart” and “Start Smart” provide FREE training on negotiating salary and benefits. The materials deal with the gender inequality wage pay gap and include role playing and open discussion during the sessions. There is a free online course accessible from this page, but if your group would like an in-person training because interacting with other women and participating in discussions with women in all fields is empowering for all, contact us! We will need the help of eager young women and men in organizing and advertising these functions.Work Smart Training
  • For Huntingdon’s Oktoberfest and other community events, we provide voter registration materials and issue informationt. Volunteers are always needed to help with family-friendly activities.
  • We continue presentations in our area regarding women of historical significance as well as showcasing current women leaders in many fields. Read about our last presentation about a suffragist from Huntingdon county in this article from The Daily News.
  • We host or co-host other activities in our community as needed by events going on here. One example is hosting candidate forums for county or local races. Some of these activities have not yet been defined. Some of our activities will be decided on by the number of volunteers that we have working in/with our group. As volunteers, you will be invited to give suggestions for things that you identify that we can work together on to improve the lives of women and girls and our community.

Still aren’t sure whether you would like to volunteer with AAUW in the next year? Watch this video that discusses some of the ways that girls are limited by society.
